How I Harness Mind Allocation to Reclaim My Time and Attention
Understanding how we allocate our mental resources is crucial in today’s fast-paced world. It requires examining how we distribute our attention across different tasks, commitments, and experiences over time. On New Year’s Eve, or shortly thereafter, I conduct a Past Year Review (PYR). This process involves reviewing my calendar from the previous year and listing people, places, activities, and commitments that resulted in peak positive and negative emotional experiences. By performing an 80/20 analysis, I identify the key activities that significantly impacted my life, both positively and negatively.
Planning for the Future
With a “do more of” and “do less of” list in hand, I plan for the coming year by scheduling important activities and experiences in advance. I ensure these essential items are present in my calendar, as they are likely to be overshadowed by less important but more urgent tasks if left unscheduled. This proactive scheduling helps me maintain a balance between my commitments and personal fulfillment.
Weekly Mind Allocation Strategies
Weekly planning is just as important as yearly planning. To mitigate the cognitive costs of task switching, I establish a weekly rhythm that allows me to focus on specific types of tasks on particular days. For instance, Mondays are often reserved for administrative tasks, while physical activity is prioritized in the mornings, especially when I’m in environments conducive to exercise, like Colorado.
Avoiding Distractions
It’s essential to minimize distractions that can derail our attention. I find that social media, particularly in the mornings, is a toxic distraction. To combat this, I have removed many apps from my phone, recognizing the significant time they can consume unknowingly. The objective is to cultivate the ability to be still and resist the urge to fill every idle moment with digital consumption, which ultimately enhances focus and reduces susceptibility to external manipulation.

Being present and comfortable with boredom is crucial for mental resilience. By resisting the temptation to escape boredom with digital distractions, we strengthen our ability to remain calm and composed.
